Curriculum - MLIS Master of Library and Information Studies

The MLIS program requires a minimum
 of 36 credit hours. Students may complete the program in less than two years by enrolling in two online courses per semester. Online courses hold virtual sessions, usually one night per week (6:00-8:45 p.m. Central Time).

Required Courses (9 hours)

  • LS 500 Information and Media
  • LS 501 Information in Communities
  • LS 513 Professional Paths

Area of Emphasis (27 hours)

In addition to the required core courses, students must complete 27 credit hours in their chosen area of emphasis. Students pursuing State of Alabama School Library Media Certification will take courses approved by the Alabama State Department of Education and must pass a written comprehensive examination.
