Over the past 15 years educators have witnessed a shift in the delivery of special education services.

Rather than pull students out of the general classroom to work in small groups, special educators now join the general classroom in an effort to diversify instructional practices which benefit all learners.

This change in way in which educators deliver special education services to exceptional students creates the need for leaders who possess the knowledge and skills to collaborate with, train, and support general classroom teachers. The University of Alabama's College of Education Special Education and Multiple Abilities Department offers an Educational Specialist in Special Education. The program's design provides educators with the opportunity to build expertise in the area of Special Education while promoting collaboration and diversification of instruction to better serve all learners in the general classroom.

The program is offered in the weekend format making it convenient for educators who work full-time to earn an advanced degree.

Certification areas within Special Education include Gifted and Talented P-12, Collaborative K-12, and Early Childhood B-8.

Students enrolled in the EdS weekend program pay main campus graduate tuition rates.
