Equip Yourself for the Highest Level of K-12 Leadership

The program provides students with the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to function as scholarly, ethical and reflective decision-makers in the areas of executive management, educational leadership and policy. Graduates may pursue leadership positions as assistant principals, principals, supervisors, assistant superintendents, superintendents and state-level personnel. The program is offered at the Gadsden Center or in hybrid format with coursework online and at the Tuscaloosa campus.

Curriculum

Courses for the program are offered in a hybrid format combining weekends and an online coursework. A minimum of 72 credit hours beyond the master’s degree is required for completion of the EdD program. Please note that courses are subject to change.

Required Courses

  • Educational Leadership Courses (AEL): 36 hours
  • Educational Foundations Courses (BEF): 12 hours
  • Educational Research (BER): 12 hours
  • Dissertation Hours: 12 hours

Depending on coursework prior to admission to the EdD program, prerequisites for more advanced study in educational leadership may be required.

Admission

Admission to the EdD program requires the following:

  • A master’s degree from an accredited institution
  • An overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or a 3.0 average for the last 60 credit hours in a degree program, or a 3.0 or higher in a completed graduate degree program
  • A minimum combined score of 300 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or at least a 50th percentile on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT)*

*Test scores are waived for Fall 2021 semester applications.
