Proctored Testing

Students enrolled in online or video streaming courses have several options for exam proctoring. Exams may be taken in the Bama By Distance Testing Services office on campus; online using a live online proctoring service, at a two or four-year college that has a testing services area; or at a local library that provides proctoring services. All on-campus, online and off-campus proctored exam scheduling should be done in your Blackboard course through SmarterProctoring. Testing deadlines are provided in the course syllabus/schedule of each course. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule tests in accordance with the established deadlines. Additional charges may be incurred for proctoring services depending upon the location/method selected by the student. The student is responsible for any proctoring cost.

Please note that we do not offer proctored testing services for certification, licensure, or non-credit course examinations of any kind.

Important note: Student Testing Code of Conduct

Students taking online or off-campus proctored tests are held to the same student code of conduct as students testing on the UA campus. In accordance with the UA Code of Student Conduct, you understand and agree that any misconduct or fraudulent activity committed by you in connection with your UA exam may result in invalidation of your scores, immediate suspension or termination of your access to further online proctored or approved off-campus testing, and disciplinary action by UA consistent with student code of conduct policies. You understand and agree that the online or off-campus proctor will report any suspected fraud or testing misconduct (academic and/or behavioral) to UA and/or law enforcement authorities. Under the guidelines of student misconduct, UA and law enforcement agencies will pursue any action reasonably necessary to protect students, school records, and the integrity of all testing materials.

Online Proctoring

Students may choose to complete proctored exams using a live online proctor service. Students must present two forms of identification, and one form must be a picture ID. Since all exams are recorded, students should refrain from using a debit or social security card as a second form of ID for security reasons.

Laptops for testing

You will need a computer with reliable high speed internet connection and an external, detachable webcam is REQUIRED to use this service (no mobile devices may be used for this service). Your online proctor will not allow you to test unless you have this external, detachable webcam. Your session will be canceled and you will have to reschedule your exam. This is a Bama By Distance Testing Services requirement.

The live, online proctor will provide the necessary software to effectively proctor your session remotely. After the session is complete, your proctor will remove any remote proctoring software from your computer.

Off-Campus Proctoring

Students may choose off-campus proctoring from the options below. Any fees, such as exam proctoring fees and postage are the responsibility of the student. All exams must be scheduled in your Blackboard course through SmarterProctoring.

Students must present two forms of identification, and one form must be a picture ID.

Option 1

Exams may be taken off campus at a two- or four-year college that has a testing services area.

Option 2

Exams may be taken at an approved public library with a vetted library employee.

Option 3

Exams may be taken at an approved education center, such as Sylvan Learning Center.

Military Students: Exams may be taken at the education center at your military installation or you may have a Commissioned Officer or senior NCO proctor your exam. When you access the SmarterProctoring scheduler in your Backboard course, choose the Off-Campus scheduling option.

Pre-Approved Proctoring Locations and Requesting Approval for a Proctor

Students can search for pre-approved proctoring locations in SmarterProctoring, which can be accessed through your Blackboard course. You may use this as a guide to locate an approved proctor in your area.

Important Note: When selecting a proctor, UA does not authorize a private proctor to meet a student at any location to test, even if it is an approved library. These proctors are considered "traveling proctors" and they will not be approved by the Bama By Distance Testing Center. All proctors must be employed by the facility at which they are proctoring a student.

You must seek approval for proctors that are not listed in SmarterProctoring. If you do not find the proctor you would like to use in SmarterProctoring, have the proctor go to and click on "sign up as a proctor." After they have completed all registration steps, their request will be sent to Bama By Distance Testing Services for approval. It will take 4-5 days for this process so please plan accordingly. Share these proctor instructions with your off-campus proctor.
