Curriculum - MLIS Master of Library and Information Studies

The MLIS program requires a minimum
 of 36 credit hours. Students may complete the program in less than two years by enrolling in two online courses per semester. Online courses hold virtual sessions, usually one night per week (6:00-8:45 p.m. Central Time). Students must complete the following required courses.

  • LS 500 Organization of Information
  • LS 501 Introduction to Library and Information Studies
  • LS 502 Research Methods
  • LS 507 User Center Information Services
  • LS 560 Information Technologies

To fulfill the required management component, students
 must take one of the following courses.

  • LS 508 Management Theory and Practice
  • LS 530 Public Libraries
  • LS 531 Academic Libraries
  • LS 532 School Media Centers
  • LS 533 Special Libraries and Information Centers

Please note that courses are subject to change.

In addition to the required core courses, students must complete 18 credit hours of electives, (12 must be in LS courses). Students pursuing State of Alabama School Library Media Certification will take courses approved by the Alabama State Department of Education and must pass a written comprehensive examination.
