Admission - MA in Secondary Education (Reading Specialist P-12 Certification)

To be eligible for admission, prospective students must meet the following requirements:

  • Alabama Class B certification or equivalent
  • Two full years of K-12 classroom teaching experience
    • Complete the Supplement EXP form to verify two full years of teaching experience.

  • The Praxis for Teaching Reading (Test Code 5204) is required if certification is in a teaching field other than Elementary, Early Childhood, or Collaborative Special Education (K-6)
  • A minimum GRE score of 300 (verbal and quantitative combined) or an MAT score above the 50th percentile
  • An overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or a 3.0 average for the last 60 semester hours in a degree program

A completed application package includes the following materials:

  • Graduate distance learning program application
  • Departmental application (.pdf)
  • Official test scores - test scores must not be more than 5 years old
  • Three letters of recommendation that describe teaching ability and potential for leadership in literacy instruction - submit to both the Graduate School and Dr. Julianne Coleman at
  • Participation in the interview process
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Statement of purpose - completed online
