Gifted and Talented Programs

The University of Alabama's College of Education Special Education and Multiple Abilities Department offers courses which lead to certification in the area of gifted and talented.  The alternative master’s degree program in special education gifted and talented is designed for those who hold a bachelor's degree in a field other than education and are interested in pursuing a teaching career.  Those who currently hold an Alabama Class B teaching certificate are eligible for the traditional master's degree program.  The EdS program attracts students with Alabama Class A certification in gifted and talented seeking Class AA certification.  Emphasis is placed on experiences that will lead to an understanding of the special nature and needs of students who are gifted and talented, application of a variety of instructional models and appropriate educational strategies, and the development of skills necessary to plan and implement differentiated educational programming.

Alternative MA in Special Education
The alternative MA degree leads to Alabama Class A certification in gifted and talented P-12 and is designed for those who do not currently hold a bachelor's degree in education.  Click here to see the curriculum.

MA in Special Education
The master of arts degree program offers courses, following state guidelines, that lead to an Alabama Class A Professional teaching certificate. A teacher graduating from the program will be certified to teach gifted and talented P-12 students. Click here to see the curriculum.

EdS in Special Education
The EdS degree in special education leads to Alabama Class AA teacher certification. The 30-credit-hour program focuses on preparation for leadership positions within gifted education.  Click here to see the curriculum.
